So here’s the latest portrait update. I am starting to render in the hair and clothes. I am just awe struck, she is coming to life before my eyes.

Crazy Time, Sharpening Frustrations, & Bracket Madness

Its been a crazy week. I have barely had time to work on my current project til today. I am still excited at where its going. I have to say this drawing is the highlight to my week and of course my new sewing machine. I am still struggling with soft pencils and my sharpener, I think it is sanding one side down more than another… not exactly sure why. So hoping I won’t be needing a new one. If anyone has suggestions it would be much appreciated. I feel like crying when I lose a pencil due to faulty equipment—just so frustrating.
The low note, bracket-wise Wichita State lost…. Sad to say the least. And even Kansas State lost today. The upsets are making things interesting (with so many #2s losing out).
Hope I get some more drawing time in tomorrow.
Highlights and Sandpaper

I can’t believe how much I was able to do this past weekend. Sadly I did have a white charcoal pencil decide to disintegrate, luckily the others are staying solid. I have started trying to use sandpaper on the really soft pencils to get my point, when the pencil sharpener seems like overkill. Overall I think its really starting to come together and you can see her personality coming through. I have included my reference with the portrait update this time.

Light Sketching

This is the first update for this portrait of a baby girl. To begin I worked a very light sketch, I am hoping it is still legible over the web. Due to the media being a very dark pencil with white highlights I wanted to sketch lightly as not to pose problems later as I start to shade the lightest areas of the drawing. Hope to get even more done this weekend.
Headache After Headache….

I apologize if this comes across as a complaint or whining. I have been dealing with headache after headache, due to the weather and some muscle issue. One of these days I will hunker down and illustrate how a migraine feels visually. I have had a frustrating week progress wise. Any ways Friday was supposed to be a work day, but due to a headache and faulty lighting in my studio, I didn’t make much progress. Sadly my lighting woes won’t improve for about a week or so. My back up bulbs, apparently were already being used. And of course they are special and had to be ordered. So reinforcing the idea to check supplies and make sure I am prepared. This time I hope I have learned my lesson.

Making some progress today, I dove in head first and just ran with it. Here is update #2 on the latest portrait project. I am really liking the direction of the eyes. Having some difficulty with keeping my pencils sharp for the detail. I really hate it when my pencils keep breaking down in the sharpener. I am sure this won’t be the last and it isn’t the first either. No worries I still like the new sharpener, I think its the pencil this time. I still wonder if this is going faster than the larger drawings, which I have to admit, I prefer working larger. If I can hit the mark on this one I will have to try more smaller projects, especially if it takes less time.
Popularity, Wallflowers, and Beauty…

“Popularity” Illustration Friday’s topic this week. I know this post is truly stretching to fit the parameters, but I just finished this beautiful portrait and wanted to share it (We’ll have to see if the client agrees). Popularity I think this is possibly every preteen, teenage boy’s and girl’s challenge. Always feeling that they are the wallflower and trying to make it into the spotlight. I think with age comes the wisdom to realize popularity is not truly that important, its the beauty inside that matters. Being comfortable with yourself and liking yourself, I think is a challenge for everyone at any age. Dakota is a beautiful dog, I am hoping that I just provided a glimpse of her personality and the beauty it holds.
Coming to Life

It always starts with a blank page and then an idea. Always a bit sketchy at first you never know where the drawing will lead you or what you will learn. It is always a challenge, and I welcome that. It keeps things exciting. I am sure when Frankenstein came to life the Doctor was amazed, possibly a little shocked. I am always amazed at what other artists create and more often than not what I can create with just a pencil or a pastel.
Here is my latest update of Dakota… she really is coming to life. Hoping the client is happy with its direction too. I am trying to keep it from going to white since she is somewhat white, but also touched with champagne coloring. I know its not quite right just yet. Hoping my next update sheds some light on the colors.
