I am loving this expression, portrait update #3. Having an industrious and creative weekend, plan on knocking out some more today.

Light Sketching

This is the first update for this portrait of a baby girl. To begin I worked a very light sketch, I am hoping it is still legible over the web. Due to the media being a very dark pencil with white highlights I wanted to sketch lightly as not to pose problems later as I start to shade the lightest areas of the drawing. Hope to get even more done this weekend.

Headache After Headache….

I apologize if this comes across as a complaint or whining. I have been dealing with headache after headache, due to the weather and some muscle issue. One of these days I will hunker down and illustrate how a migraine feels visually. I have had a frustrating week progress wise. Any ways Friday was supposed to be a work day, but due to a headache and faulty lighting in my studio, I didn’t make much progress. Sadly my lighting woes won’t improve for about a week or so. My back up bulbs, apparently were already being used. And of course they are special and had to be ordered. So reinforcing the idea to check supplies and make sure I am prepared. This time I hope I have learned my lesson.

I meant to get this on here this weekend. Its funny how free time gets filled so very quickly. The weather finally cooperated so I delivered Dakota and cleaned up my studio. I have started work on a kitty. This is one of the smallest ones I have done in a while. Will have to see if this goes faster due to the size and if I am able to keep the detail at a smaller scale. Here’s the initial sketch.
Bow Ties Are Cool! Really…

Happy Valentine’s everyone! I know not everyone cares for this holiday. It tends to come off as a Hallmark Holiday, they do tend to have a card for everything. That is why I like to make gifts for people when I can, they have so much more meaning. So here is the graphic I designed for my husband (finished size is 3.5″ wide by about 7″ or so). Its now on the t-shirt, Whew! Almost out of time, but its done and ready to surprise him when he gets home. YEAH!!! (hoping he still likes it) I think it turned out really well. What do you think?
Am I there yet?

I had a number of comments that the negative space was too much due to the way Dakota was laying. The customer had some concerns too. So here is the latest update, hoping I have hit the mark. I didn’t want to include too much and kept it monochrome so the colors would not take away from Dakota.
Hands 2 Serve — Design

This logo was designed for the Hands 2 Serve Project. Essentially very similar to the Hope In Action Ministry. Members of the project work to improve houses for those in need and are unable to do the work themselves. Like the Hope In Action Ministry all of the work is completed by volunteers (NO they are not paid, but paid through doing a good deed for someone). Design – It was felt that the logo needed to make a bold statement through graphics and color. It would be used both in print and web… and on t-shirts via silkscreen. For the T-shirt, another graphic needed to be designed that would work complimentary with the original.
IF you are interested in volunteering or need further information please Matt Rivers via email mattrivers19@hotmail.com
Here are some additional sketches from the beginning of the project, a glimpse of my design process.
Almost There…The Sistine Chapel

As I get closer on this portrait to the finish, I keep thinking, I wonder how Michelangelo felt as he tackled the Sistine Chapel. My current portrait is an 11″ x 14″ pastel drawing (no where near the level of difficulty or scope of Michelangelo, a master). His canvas was a ceiling of an entire chapel (take a virtual tour). I just imagine his relief and wonder at what he was able to accomplish. It would be interesting to ask him questions at the beginning, middle and the end… how much would those answers of changed. Just a thought.
Here is my update of Zeus. He is coming together beautifully. I am still tackling his wrinkles, so much detail in blacks and grays. Its a challenge and yes, at times I get a bit nervous (am I doing it right?)… I think the end results will speak for themselves. Hoping to deliver by Wednesday of next week.
